This fitting is shaped like an upside down 'U'. As such it has a low spot in which fuel vapor would condense and pool. When the car was shut off, residual tank pressure would force a small amount of the collected liquid fuel out through the check valve on the end, and it would evaporate to cause the smell. To fix the problem, I simply removed the fitting which was the source of collect gasoline. I allowed the vent line to hang straight down which prevented any fuel from collecting; and evaporating later. Since I made this simple fix, the fuel smell is gone.
